SSE Thermal, a leading provider of flexible energy, has submitted a planning application for its proposed new power station running on sustainable biofuels at the historic Tarbert site in County Kerry.
Tarbert Next Generation Power Station would run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) with the potential to convert to hydrogen in the future. HVO is produced by transforming waste oils into a non-fossil-based oil alternative to diesel, in adherence with EU sustainability standards, offering a lower-carbon option to unabated power generation.
The proposed 350MW plant would continue Tarbert’s legacy of power generation, with the existing station required to close this year in line with EU environmental directives. Pending planning approval by An Bord Pleanála the new station could be providing vital flexible power and supporting security of supply by 2026.
Earlier this year, SSE Thermal submitted a planning application for Platin Power Station, a proposed new 170MW plant in County Meath which would also run on sustainable biofuels. Both proposed stations have secured a 10-year capacity agreement set to begin in 2026/27. Capacity auctions play a critical role in the all-island electricity market, ensuring a reliable power supply for the future.
A non-statutory community consultation for Tarbert Next Generation Power Station was conducted in July and August allowing communities to engage with the proposals and share feedback. Key activities during this phase included the distribution of informative newsletters, in-person events in Tarbert and Listowel and an online virtual consultation room.
